Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight foot to clinch the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win against the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
The champion started the final round with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood edged a stroke clear with two holes to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.
Playoff Climax
That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more individual. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
