EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
