Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the board at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

The economist remarked in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their advancement".

The prominent academic, who once led the Ivy League institution, announced on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his connections with Epstein.

The newly public emails showed that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 apprehension for suspected sex trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it respected Summers' decision to step down.

"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," the organization stated.

Legislative Background

This announcement arrives after the two houses of Congress decided on this week to endorse a bill that would require the US justice department to disclose its records on the case.

The legislation will afterward head to the desk of US President Donald Trump for signature. He has indicated he intends to sign the legislation, after modifying his position on the subject following pushback from his base.

A group of Epstein-related emails released by the legislative panel days ago referenced multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.

After the messages were released with the public, the former official stated he accepted "full responsibility for my poor decision to continue corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

The economist occupied senior posts under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.

He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a faculty member there. When stating his step-down from public roles earlier on this week, he stated he would maintain his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following his statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in Washington where he was a senior fellow, confirmed that he was no longer connected with the organization.

The former official became part of the leadership of the AI company, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a defeated move to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
