Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Earn First Victories After Player Arrests

NBA game action

The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half points against the Grizzlies

Miami Heat claimed a decisive 146 to 114 win over the Grizzlies in their initial NBA match since guard Terry Rozier was detained over alleged illegal sports betting.

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also detained in connection with a broad federal probe into illegal gambling. The two individuals contest the allegations.

But, the Heat were not distracted as they scored eighty-six first-half scores to be ahead of Memphis by 39 at halftime, the biggest halftime lead in the franchise's 37-year history.

Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and afterwards stated Rozier had the support of the team.

"We support him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."

Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is very dear to all of us. He has made a beneficial influence on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces this."

Portland also secured their first game since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the squad to a convincing 139-119 victory against the Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events

Speaking about the detentions for the first time, league head Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

Silver further said an NBA investigation into the player's actions in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he participated for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.

"We then looked into the matter and were open regarding it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA is unable to.

"So, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.

"Moreover two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Terry.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
