The Boss Maresca Labels Pre-Match Time as The 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' with the Club

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca remarked that the run-up to the weekend's win against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced at Stamford Bridge.

The 44-year-old delivered a puzzling statement in his post-match media briefing even after notching a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge courtesy of goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those points sent Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, perhaps improving the atmosphere after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's winless run to four outings.

Yet, when questioned about Gusto's assist and general performance, Maresca surprisingly shared his frustration over the previous two days at the club.

"The way the squad are eager to learn has been fantastic and this is the reason why I applaud them - because with numerous problems, they are doing very well after a tricky week," he commented.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the previous 48 hours have been the toughest because many people withheld support from us."

Pressed on what he meant, the former Leicester City boss added: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When questioned if he meant people within at Chelsea, he answered: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before clarifying when asked if it was aimed at fans or the press: "I adore the fans and we are very happy with the fans."

Injury & Disciplinary Crisis

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing fitness and suspension issues, remarking they had been without key forward Cole Palmer for much of the campaign, in addition to being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.

"I really praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them minus Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are performing exceptionally. Today was 5 games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer available, we said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our best player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would like people externally to appreciate because the effort from the players is fantastic."

Chelsea's success over Everton cemented their standing in fourth in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.

Speculation Over Maresca's Remark

It was not immediately clear what exactly prompted Maresca to describe the past 48 hours as the worst of his tenure as Chelsea head coach.

In that period, the coach had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a training session at Cobham, faced a pre-game news conference where he seemed relaxed, and secured a win over an in-form Everton team.

It was unclear whether any particular press stories had unsettled him, if online discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to deny that it was an issue involving the club's fans, a section of which have not yet fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester in July 2024.
