This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
