Roughly fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement state they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then discovered many other smeared vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report initial examinations suggest the substance was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; investigators are presently not cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the residents for details.
An important political figure stated the attack made him speechless and required to be resolved quickly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter focusing on residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
