Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest certain calls made by the official, following the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
